State House Candidate Forum (120th Distr.)

Tues. 13 October 2020,  7 – 8 PM,  by Zoom

The League will host a forum featuring Joanna Bryn Smith and Aaron Kaufer, candidates for State Representative from the 120th District.  Andy Mehalshick will moderate the forum, which will be held by Zoom.

To register for the event, please send an e-mail to 120thForum@gmail.com.  A Zoom link will be sent to you in time for the event.

Centennial of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment

Due to COVID-19 accommodations, please verify with the organization hosting an event before making plans.

In recognition that 2020 is the centennial of the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States, fourteen organizations across Luzerne County have come together for a year-long celebration of women’s suffrage.  This year-long series of events will include exhibitions, lectures, receptions, crafts, and non-partisan voter registration drives.  Beginning in March (Women’s History Month) and running through Election Day, the 19th Amendment Centennial will feature events located throughout the county at art galleries, history museums, colleges and religious organizations.  All events are open to the public, many of them free of charge.  Detailed information on individual events will follow as the year progresses.  For more information, contact the host organization for any particular event. Luzerne County Historical Society Exhibit

The Luzerne County Historical Society is currently featuring  It was “We the People,” not “We the White Male Citizens,” a virtual exhibit celebrating the centennial of women’s suffrage, hosted by Mark Ricetti and Carol Lavery.  Click here for a a tour of the exhibit.

Women Power the Vote:
  a joint commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment

On Monday, 21 September 2020, the Chapter co-hosted the Peace and Justice Society’s Sabol Lecture, a conversation between Dr. Susan Poulson, Professor of History at The University of Scranton and author of Suffrage: The Epic Struggle for Women’s Right to Vote,  and Dr. Teri Finneman, Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Kansas and author of Press Portrayals of Women Politicians: 1870s to 2000s.  The conversation was followed by discussion of the absentee ballot procedure and a short video highlighting the Luzerne County Historical Society's exhibit on women’s suffrage.

The Society thanks the McGowan Center at Kings College for providing the Zoom hosting for this event.

2020 Annual Meeting

Due to the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, the section canceled its traditional, June Annual Dinner Meeting this year.  Instead, the chapter held its 2020 Annual Meeting on-line, through Zoom, on July 23.

The WB-LWV Chapter was invited by the F.M. Kirby Center to conduct a voter registration prior to the stage presentation of “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom,” on Friday February 21, 2020.  The musical, which is filled with traditional and original Gospel and Freedom songs, tells the story of Lynda Blackmon, the youngest person to walk all the way from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on the Voting Rights March of 1965.  Lynda was jailed nine times before her fifteenth birthday, as she and her friends and neighbors fought alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to win the right to vote for African Americans.  The march led to the Voting Rights Act, which was signed by President Johnson on August 6, 1965.

The League held its annual holiday dinner on December 5th, 2019, at The Café (1120 Rte 315, Plains).

Luzerne County Council Forum

The WB-LWV Chapter sponsored a forum for the eleven candidates running for the Luzerne County Council, in the November 2019 election.  The forum, on October 24, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Wilkes Barre, was moderated by Andy Mehalshick. (Citizens’ Voice Article)

75th Anniversary Celebration

The WB section of the League of Women Voters hosted a reception on October 19, 2019, at Main Street Galleries, in Kingston, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the section.  Highlights included the presentation of proclamations from both Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski and the office of Sen. John Yudichak.  (Times-Leader Article)
